This year’s Scarecrow Competition is here – later in the year than usual but hopefully you’ve had extra time to think of an idea! Last year’s winners are below, they were amazing, we had a huge range of scarecrows last year –party-gate, queens guards, pokemon, star wars, sports scarecrows, animals, book characters, I’m always impressed with the range of ideas. Details of this year’s competition are below.

So it’s time to get your thinking caps on for the beginning of September. To enter, come along to the Balerno Village Trust stall at Balerno Farmers’ Market on 12 August (9am-1pm). Entries cost £5 and include a bag of straw to get you started or you can use recycled materials if you prefer. If you can’t make the Market, email us at: farmersmarket@balernovt.org.uk and we can arrange to collect/deliver but please be aware that we have a limited quantity of straw, so the sooner the better! Rules and dates are below:

Entry Rules:

You must be a resident of Balerno to enter – the Scarecrow must be on display at an address in Balerno.

Saturday 12th August – Straw will sold from the Balerno Village Trust stall at the Farmers Market from 9am – 1pm at the cost of £5 for a large binbag. There are limited bags available. However if you prefer not to use straw then you can use your own materials. Scarecrows have to be outside ready for folk to go scarecrow-hunting by noon on Saturday 2nd September. We will be taking photographs for judging on the Saturday after 1pm. We ask that you leave your scarecrow out for at least the 2 days though you can of course leave your scarecrow out for longer if you wish!

Photographs of the individual scarecrow entries will be posted on the Balerno Farmers Market and Balerno Village Trust Facebook pages and also this website for voting from Monday 4th September until 12noon on Saturday 9th September, voting slips will also be available from Balerno Hardware and the Village Trust stall at the Farmers Market until noon on Saturday 9th. No personal details will be published with the photos. You can register your vote by ‘liking’ the scarecrow of your choice on Facebook, using the voting slips or by emailing your vote to farmersmarket@balernovt.org.uk.

The winners will be announced at the Farmers’ Market on 9th September at12.30pm with prizes including a specially commissioned trophy from Harmonies in Wood, Farmers’ Market vouchers, sweeties and certificates.  This year there will also be a ‘Farmers Market Winner’ based solely on physical voting slips given on the day of the Market.

The winner and runners up must consent to their name and winning scarecrow photo being made public on social media and in the local newspaper.
