It’s time to get your thinking caps on for this year’s Scarecrow Trail. To enter, either come along to the Balerno Village Trust stall at Balerno Farmers’ Market on 9th May(9am-1pm), or from the BVT stall at Gala Day on Saturday 23rd May . Entries cost £5 and include a bag of straw to get you started or you can use recycled materials if you prefer. If you can’t make the Market, email us at: farmersmarket@balernovt.org.uk and we can arrange to collect/deliver but please be aware that we have a limited quantity of straw, so the sooner the better! Rules and dates are below:
Entry Rules:
You must be a resident of Balerno to enter – the Scarecrow must be on display at an address in Balerno.
There are 2 categories for Scarecrows this year: 1. Community Organisation/Business entry or 2. Private/individual entrants. There are prizes for each category.
Saturday 9th May – Straw will sold from the Balerno Village Trust stall at the Farmers Market from 9am – 1pm at the cost of £5 for a large binbag. There are limited bags available. However if you prefer not to use straw then you can use your own materials. Straw will also be available by emailing farmersmarket@balernovt.org.uk and we will arrange delivery to you as long as we still have straw available.

Deadline for entries is 5pm on Thursday 4th June.
Maps of the sites for Scarecrows will be available online from Friday 5th June and paper copies will be available from the Mill Cafe.
Scarecrows have to be outside ready for folk to go scarecrow-hunting by noon on Saturday 6th June. We will be taking photographs for judging on the Saturday after 1pm. We ask that you leave your scarecrow out for at least the 2 days though you can of course leave your scarecrow out for longer if you wish!
Photographs of the individual scarecrow entries will be posted on the Balerno Farmers Market and Balerno Village Trust Facebook pages and also this website for voting from Monday 8th June until 12noon on Saturday 13th June, voting slips will also be available from The Mill Cafe and the Village Trust stall at the Farmers Market until noon on Saturday 13th. No personal details will be published with the photos apart from the address where the scarecrow resides! You can register your vote by ‘liking’ the scarecrow of your choice on Facebook, using the voting slips or by emailing your vote to farmersmarket@balernovt.org.uk.
The winners will be announced at the Farmers’ Market on 13th June at12.30pm with prizes including a specially commissioned trophy from Harmonies in Wood and Farmers’ Market vouchers for the individual entrants and sweeties and certificates for the business entrants.
The winner and runners up must consent to their name and winning scarecrow photo being made public on social media and in the local newspaper.
